Things to Do

Think about things to do in Los Angeles and your thoughts probably turn to the relaxing you’ll be doing on your vacation. You’ll sit on the beach, maybe surf, maybe play a round of golf at one of the local courses, or work on your tan.

But Los Angeles’ recreation opportunities extend far beyond the possibilities presented at the beach. There are shows to take in, symphonies and choruses to hear, sports to watch, games to play and shopping to do.

There are movie stars to spot and Hollywood signs to see; picnics to enjoy in Griffith park and hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains that trap the smog in the city. Speaking of smog, there are freeways to tour and the collective dependence on the automobile to scoff at. You’ll breathe in particulates and get used to the smell and, if it rains, marvel at how far you can see from a vantage point above the city.

During your trip to Los Angeles you’ll have roller coasters to ride and theme parks to visit; food and flavors from cultures all around the world to sample and cocktails concocted from exotic ingredients to sip in VIP rooms. You’ll have pick-up lines to use over thumping bass lines and velvet ropes to stand behind before you enter the club.

There is sunshine to soak up and more stars in the sidewalk than the night sky and locations to stare at from your favorite TV shows. There will be actors/models and models/actors and everyone will get a little antsy if you’re visiting during network TV casting season. You will meet someone who knows someone who knows your favorite movie star.

There are comedy clubs to laugh in and two drinks to buy, minimum. There are feelings of awkwardness to have when you find that the comedians want to talk after the show. There are extremely nice cars to gawk at and houses to ridicule for their space age architecture and wonder if you’d recognize the residents.

There are walking tours and bus tours and star tours and historical tours and footprints to compare at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. There are neighborhoods to recognize from rap songs and uncomfortable feelings when you encounter real poverty. And if by chance you ever feel unsafe, whether it’s because of the neighborhood, the freeway speeds or the crowds, remember, you’re in no danger of running out of things to do.
