One of the things that Los Angeles residents say about their city is that there is a wealth of culture and art at their fingertips in Los Angeles. Their assessments are largely correct. The wealth of resources, talent and people supports a thriving theater and dance community and the thought of performing in front of the kinds of crowds that venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall can pull bring classical music talent from all over the world to perform in Los Angeles.

The most famous theatrical productions and dance companies perform in a series of venues clumped together in the downtown area. The most recognized of these is the Walt Disney Concert Hall, but the Mark Taper Forum, Ahmanson Theatre and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion also host world-class concerts, dance productions, and plays featuring Hollywood talent taking a break from rigorous filming schedules.

Theater

Theater productions at the Mark Taper Forum generally feature top acting talent and Prize-winning plays fill the production schedule year-round, but there are far more places to find great theater than in the LA Music Center. UCLA’s theater department hosts everything from the Royal Shakespeare Company to student productions and numerous smaller companies around the city have big name productions and high quality actors in their ranks.

Dance

Los Angeles may be known for the actors that flood the city, but there is no lack of dancing talent at the disposal of ballet companies and theaters. Ballet theater can be found throughout the city and there is more than a few performances of “The Nutcracker” each Christmas season.

American Ballet Theatre keeps a steady diet of ballets coming through the city as well as the Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company and the Mark Morris Dance Group. Because productions and schedules are always changing, the best way to find a show running during your visit is to check the current schedules.

LA Philharmonic

The Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of the most architecturally interesting buildings in southern California. The curving metallic structure arrests the attention of commuters and sightseers alike and is a worthy home to the LA Philharmonic. The LA Philharmonic presents concerts on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the afternoons and evenings for a total of eight concerts each week. The LA Phil also performs alongside celebrity guests, jazz groups and other musical acts throughout the week.
